| A deck is a substantial investment. In that regard, the choice of a contractor, his quality of work, and the materials he uses determine the value/enjoyment you will receive from your deck. The following is provided as a partial checklist in order to assist you in your choice of a contractor.
THE ESTIMATE PROCESS:
- Get at least two estimates
- Compare materials.
- Composites have advantages over wood but are a bit more expensive
- There are different qualities/grades of wood decking, ensure you specify
- Obtain design at estimate showing proposed deck scaled relative to house
- Initial designs should be able to be modified or revised
- Design concepts should add interest with angled corners, decking patterns, wraparound steps, benches, multi-levels, or planters
- Check references, view similar work contractor has completed, contact BBB
- Avoid any pressure to sign a contract that same day
THE CONTRACTOR:
- How long have they been in business
- Do they have both general liability and workman’s compensation insurance
- Are they licensed by the state (contractors license) and city (business license)
- Will they be responsible for obtaining the building permit
- What was their initial response and appointment keeping
- Did they provide references
- Are they knowledgeable about the various decking products
- Are they willing for you to view current or existing work
- What are the warranties offered on the product and workmanship
- Will they commit to a time line for the project
- Do they accept credit cards, or offer financing
- Is the company principal involved in the actual project
